She Evacuated Last Hurricane Season and Came Home to Broken Windows. Now She’s Ready.
Patricia lives two blocks from the water in Jacksonville Beach. She’s ridden out minor storms before, but last year she did something she’d been putting off for years: she evacuated before the storm made landfall.
She came home three days later to find one of her large rear windows broken — a piece of wind-driven debris had gone through the glass — and a second window cracked but intact. The cleanup was manageable, the insurance claim went fine, and the windows were replaced within two weeks.
But what stayed with her was the feeling of leaving home not knowing whether it would be intact when she came back. She’d been meaning to install hurricane shutters since she moved in seven years ago. After that experience, she stopped meaning to and started doing.
We installed accordion storm shutters on her rear windows and sliding glass door, panel shutters on the side windows, and a reinforced garage door brace. She called us when a named storm formed in the Gulf last month. We had everything locked down in about an hour.
“I left for my daughter’s house, and I wasn’t worried about my house the whole time I was gone,” she told us. “That’s new.”
Hurricane Protection for Jacksonville Beach: What Actually Works
Jacksonville Beach, Neptune Beach, and Atlantic Beach are in a different risk profile than South Florida. We’re not in the typical hurricane bullseye, and direct major landfalls near Jacksonville are historically less common than further south. But “less common” is not “never” — and more importantly, even glancing blows and tropical storms can generate enough wind and debris to cause serious window and door damage on coastal homes.
The question isn’t whether Jacksonville Beach will take a direct category 4 hit. The question is: when a storm tracks near the coast, are you going to lie awake in a shelter or your daughter’s guest room wondering if your windows are holding?
Here’s an honest overview of the most common shutter options for Northeast Florida homes:
Accordion Shutters
These are permanently mounted on either side of the window or door opening and fold accordion-style. To deploy, you simply pull them across and lock them in place — no ladders, no storage, no assembly. They’re the most convenient option for people who live on the coast year-round and evacuate regularly. The trade-off is cost: accordion shutters are the most expensive option upfront, typically $15 to $25 per square foot installed.
Roll-Down Shutters
These roll up into a housing above the window when not in use and roll down when needed, either manually or with a motor. Motorized versions are the easiest to deploy but are the most expensive. Manual roll-downs are mid-range in cost and still faster to use than panels. They’re excellent for large openings and are increasingly popular on new construction in flood zones.
Panel Shutters (Aluminum or Steel)
The most affordable option. Corrugated metal panels are stored in a garage or shed and installed over window and door openings when a storm approaches. They require more time to install — usually one to two hours per home for someone who knows what they’re doing — and require storage space when not in use. They’re Code-approved and offer excellent protection. The main downside is deployment time and effort, especially for homes with multiple windows or openings above the first floor.
Polycarbonate Panels
Similar to metal panels in concept but made from clear or translucent polycarbonate. They allow light to pass through, which matters if you’re sheltering in place rather than evacuating. They’re impact-resistant, Code-approved in Florida, and becoming more popular in Northeast Florida. Mid-range in cost.
Impact-Resistant Glass
Not a shutter, but worth mentioning. If you’re replacing windows anyway, impact glass eliminates the need to deploy shutters entirely — it’s permanently in place. High upfront cost but zero storm prep required. A growing number of Jacksonville Beach homeowners who are renovating choose this route.
What About My Garage Door?
Garage doors are one of the most frequently overlooked vulnerabilities in a coastal home during a hurricane. A standard garage door is large, relatively thin, and designed for everyday convenience — not storm resistance. If a garage door fails under wind pressure, it can cause significant structural problems by allowing wind to pressurize the interior of the garage and potentially the house.
For homes not ready to replace the entire garage door with a wind-rated model, a brace kit installed by a professional offers meaningful added resistance at a fraction of the cost. For homes due for a garage door replacement, wind-rated doors are available at various price points and are increasingly the standard in coastal construction.
Jacksonville Beach Building Code and Wind Speed Requirements
Florida’s building code is among the most stringent in the country for wind-resistance. Any hurricane shutter or protection product we install is Florida Building Code compliant and rated for the wind speed designation of your specific location. Jacksonville Beach sits in a wind zone requiring products rated for 140+ mph wind loads in many areas.
Permits are required for permanent shutter installation in Duval County. We handle the permit process — you don’t need to navigate that yourself.
The Cost of Hurricane Shutters in Jacksonville Beach
Here’s a rough breakdown for a typical coastal cottage or single-family home:
- Panel shutters (aluminum): $50 to $100 per opening, plus installation labor
- Polycarbonate panels: $75 to $150 per opening installed
- Accordion shutters: $500 to $1,500 per opening depending on size
- Roll-down shutters (manual): $600 to $1,200 per opening
- Roll-down shutters (motorized): $1,200 to $2,500+ per opening
Most Jacksonville Beach homes can be fully shuttered for $3,000 to $12,000 depending on the number and size of openings and product choice. Full-home accordion shutter projects on larger homes can run more.
Many homeowners are surprised to learn their homeowner’s insurance may offer a premium discount for documented hurricane protection. Ask your insurer — the savings over time can partially offset the installation cost.
